Uber’s Sale to Southeast Asian Rival Tests Regulators

Uber Technology Inc.’s plans to sell its Southeast Asian business to ride-hailing rival Grab is inviting antitrust scrutiny on multiple fronts, creating a major test case for the region’s young competition agencies.

Singapore and Vietnam launched investigations, the Philippines summoned the two companies for questioning, and Malaysia put both parties on notice. The regulators are asking whether the deal will lead to higher prices, fewer choices for consumers, poor service, or data privacy infractions.

Fine transport firms over fare cut delays

- HCMC – The vice chairman and general secretary of the Vietnam Valuation Association has called on authorities to fine transport enterprises that have delayed lowering fares despite multiple rounds of fuel price cuts.

It is unacceptable that transport charges have not gone down though fuel prices have been sharply slashed, Nguyen Tien Thoa said at a seminar on transport charges and benefits of consumers held by the Vietnam Standards and Consumers Association (VINASTAS) on September 8.

Consumers urged to unite for their rights

- HA NOI — Consumers should come together to find effective solutions for ensuring the protection of their rights as 90 per cent of consumers are ignorant about the organisations that protect their benefits.

This was revealed by a recent online survey of more than 1,200 customers, conducted by the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment (iSEE).

JAKARTA – The ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC) gathered at the ASEAN Secretariat from 9-10 September to deliberate a post-2015 vision, with new targets and a regional plan of action on competition for the period 2016-2025. The envisaged establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) at the end of 2015 will mark an important milestone on ASEAN’s way towards deeper regional economic integration and community-building. The Brainstorming Meeting was convened in compliance with the directives of the ASEAN High-Level Task Force on Economic Integration (HLTF-EI) to develop a strategic framework towards 2025.

A research study on the competitive landscape of the market for infant formula products for babies under 12 months of age in Vietnam between 2009 – 2011 period was officially released on October 17 by the Central Institute of Economic Management.

The research which has been undertaken by the Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS International) shows that strong competition in the market brings benefits to consumers in terms of both wide products ranges and price points that are available for consumers.
