  • VN rises to 68th on competitiveness list

    – Viet Nam has jumped up two ranks to 68th place among 144 economies worldwide, according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2014-15 which the World Economic Forum (WEF) released on Wednesday in Geneva.

    In the Southeast Asian region, Viet Nam stands behind Singapore at second place, followed by Malaysia at the 20th, Thailand at the 31st, Indonesia at the 34th and the Philippines at the 52nd spot.

  • SOEs slow to withdraw from non-core businesses

    – HCM CITY — For the last three years, most State-owned enterprises (SOEs) have had stable operations with acceptable profits, but capital withdrawal from their non-core businesses contiues to be sluggish.

    The HCM City People’s Committee reported that the city has 108 enterprises which are fully owned by the State.

  • US business lobby concerned China antitrust probes unfair

    – BEIJING – Foreign companies are increasingly concerned they are being targeted by Chinese regulators, a U.S. business lobby said on Tuesday, as a Chinese antitrust agency defended probes into firms such as U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm Inc.

    The American Chamber of Commerce in China is the latest business lobby to air its grievances over a series of investigations scrutinizing at least 30 foreign firms, as China seeks to enforce a 2008 anti-monopoly law.

  • Talks: The Longer, the Tougher

    – Since the 19th negotiation round in Brunei last August, no other formal round for negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) has been held. Instead, a multitude of meetings at all levels have taken place

    The most recent are the chief negotiator-level meeting in Vietnam from May 12 to 15, which served as a prerequisite for the ministerial meeting in Singapore from May 19 to 20, and then an informal negotiating session in Ottawa, Canada, from July 3 to 12. Upcoming are plans for a chief negotiator-level meeting in September (in Hanoi), and a ministerial meeting in October.

  • China graft watchdog probes another executive at Chinese car maker

    – BEIJING – China’s anti-graft watchdog has said it is investigating a former senior executive at FAW Group Corp. for corruption, the latest target in a widening probe against the company.

    State-owned FAW has a joint venture with Volkswagen AG. The joint venture is one of the two car-making ventures the German automaker has in China.
