One Year Since the Implementation of the Law on Protecting Consumers’ Interests

On July 18, TH and TT participated in a conference entitled “One year since the implementation of the Law on protecting consumers’ interests”. It was co-hosted by the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in Hanoi. Representative from VCA, VCCI, Vietnam Association of Consumer Protection (VINASTAS), enterprises and media were also present in the Conference.

Trade Promotion through Standardisation

AP took part in a meeting on trade promotion through standardisation held by SAWTEE and the Swedish Institute of Standards (SIS) on 17th – 18th July, 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This is a planning event so that SIS/SAWTEE could launch a large programme (funded by SIDA) on the same topic in the South and Southeast Asia region (the project countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) in the future. If the programme is successfully launched, CUTS Hanoi would be invited to partake as a relevant organisation in Vietnam, in addition to the national standard body (NSB).

AP attended the conference titled “Rio for People: Strengthening People’s Capacity for Genuine Sustainable Development” held in Hanoi on 5th – 7th June 2012.

The information sessions on the Vietnam Civil Society Facility Guidelines of Embassy of Ireland

DND attended an information sessions on the Vietnam Civil Society Facility Guidelines on the 4th of April 2012 at the Embassy of Ireland, Hanoi. The overall objective of the Civil Society Facility is to strengthen the engagement of civil society organisations in support of specific poverty issues and policy formulation processes.

The information session on the thematic programme “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development” of the European Commission

Under the framework of the thematic programme “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development” of the European Commission, the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam is launching a call for proposals for the promotion of an inclusive and empowered civil society in Vietnam, in order to facilitate non-state actors participation in poverty reduction and sustainable development strategies. DND attended the information session about this Call for Proposals which took place at the premises of the Delegation 83B Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hanoi on 9th March 2012.

Meeting on “Consumer in the Information Society: Access, Fairness and Representation”

On 05-09st of March, AP paid a visit to KL, Malaysia to attend two meetings organised by Consumers International (CI): the Asia-Pacific Regional Members’ Meeting (5-7 March) and the “Consumer in the Information Society: Access, Fairness and Representation” meeting (8-9 March).

During this visit, AP met with Sochi Rachagan , fomer Director of CIROAP (CI Regional Office for Asia and Pacific); Marimuthu Nadason, President of FOMCA to discuss about on consumer protection and competition issues as well as seek for cooperation in the future. She also had a meeting with the Malaysian partner for the UTPs project to discuss issues pertaining to the project. Besides, AP and GC had a discussion about replicating the model of the “Status of the Indian consumers” report in the context of Vietnam.

DND attended a workshop on “The portrayal of civil society organizations on print and online newspapers” organized by the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment (iSEE) on 19th December 2011 at Movenpick Hotel, Hanoi.

NTH attended a Conference entitled “Controlling enterprises’ abuse of monopoly and dominant position” organized by JICA and Vietnam Competition Authority at Hanoi Press Club on December 06th, 2011.
